It’s been a turbulent year for Manchester United’s men’s first team, who had started so well upon Michael Carrick’s arrival.
The Red Devils failed to pick up any silverware in the latter stages of the 2025/26 season, but captain Bruno Fernandes was recognised for his on-pitch efforts, winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award.
While the United women’s team had a poor end to the 2025/26 campaign, under new boss Eva Olid, they are starting 2026/27 well.
Star Ella Toone, who has been a staple of the team for years, is being awarded – but not for her on-field efforts, despite being the club’s all-time leading appearance maker and goalscorer.
Toone has been recognised at the annual This Is Manchester Awards, being handed an Outstanding Contribution to Sport award.
The contributions to sport that have helped in Toone winning the recognition include her role as creative and strategic advisor to Chorley Women Football Club, as well as setting up ET7 Academy – a football development initiative that provides an environment for young girls between the ages of 8 and 19 to learn the game.
A club legend at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old is proving an inspiration on and off the pitch for young wannabe footballers.
Speaking to MUTV delightedly after taking home the award, Toone said, “It’s a massive honour, it’s nice to win these awards.
“All I want to do is perform on the pitch, be a role model, and use my platform as much as I can to inspire young girls and boys.
“It’s so nice to be able to be in this position where I can really use my platform in a positive way, help young girls and boys start out in their journeys and give equal opportunities to everyone.
“It’s something I’m really, really proud of and that I enjoy doing.”
Many footballers should follow the United and England star’s lead.
Doing such brilliant things with so much influence and a huge platform is something commendable, and Toone has righteously been given her flowers for it.
