Warren Gatland has secured a new role with World Rugby after missing out on the Fiji head coach job.

The former Wales boss has been appointed as a coaching consultant, while his long-time assistant Jonathan Humphreys has also landed a new role with the governing body.

Fiji recently ended their search for a permanent replacement for Mick Byrne, who stepped down in April, by appointing South Africa World Cup-winning coach Jake White.

Gatland was heavily linked with the vacancy and is believed to have been among the final two candidates before White was selected.

Despite his difficult departure from Wales, Gatland boasts an impressive coaching record, having won three Six Nations Grand Slams, reached two Rugby World Cup semi-finals and led the British & Irish Lions on three tours.

Now, both Gatland and Humphreys have taken up consultancy positions with World Rugby.

Humphreys has been appointed as the organisation's scrum consultant, while Gatland will work as a coaching consultant.

The pair were present this week as World Rugby referees and officials gathered for a conference, with Humphreys delivering a presentation on scrummaging.

Gatland left his second spell in charge of Wales midway through the 2025 Six Nations after a run of 14 consecutive Test defeats.

Humphreys, who served as Wales' forwards coach under both Wayne Pivac and Gatland, departed ahead of last year's summer tour of Japan.

Gatland began his coaching career in 1989 after a successful playing career as a hooker with Waikato.

He went on to coach Ireland, Connacht, Wasps and Waikato, winning three Premiership titles, a Heineken Cup and the Air New Zealand Cup.

His first spell as Wales head coach ran from 2007 to 2019, during which he secured three Six Nations Grand Slams and guided the team to two Rugby World Cup semi-finals.

He also coached the British & Irish Lions on three tours before returning to Wales in 2022 for a second stint, which ended in 2025.
