Manchester United is following Calvin Bassey’s performances at Fulham as it considers defensive signings for 2027, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey.

The Nigeria international’s ability to play at center-back and left-back appeals to United’s recruitment department. Bailey reports that Newcastle United and Everton are also watching him, with Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig following his progress from abroad.

Fulham has also given Bassey the captain’s armband this season, reflecting the responsibility he has taken on within its defense.

Bassey’s current contract expires in June 2027, but Fulham holds an option to extend it by 12 months. The club is also interested in negotiating a new deal, leaving potential buyers with more to consider than the initial expiry date.

United’s search already includes more specialized options on the left. Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert is being considered for next summer, while Lewis Hall remains on the list after Newcastle resisted an approach during the previous window. Bassey’s experience in two positions would give United another option as it decides how to reshape the defense.

The 26-year-old joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023. The Dutch club confirmed a €22.5 million transfer fee after a season in which he made 39 appearances for Ajax. He had previously spent two years with Rangers, helping the Scottish club reach the 2022 Europa League final.

His versatility was already evident during that spell in Glasgow. Bassey moved from left-back into central defense during his second season, gaining experience in both roles before his transfers to the Netherlands and then England.

United has also seen his threat from set pieces firsthand. Bassey opened the scoring in Fulham’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford in February 2024, finishing after the home side failed to deal with a set piece. Alex Iwobi later secured the victory with a stoppage-time goal.
