Miyu Yamashita wins third title of 2026, successfully defends Maybank

Miyu Yamashita set a record as the fastest Japanese player to reach five wins on the LPGA, needing only 46 starts. The 4-foot-11 star joins the top 2 players in the world – Nelly Korda and Jeeno Thitikul – as the only players on tour this season with three or more wins.

Yamashita, who came into the week No. 4 in the world, picked up her third title this season with a two-stroke victory at the Maybank Championship in steamy Malaysia. She finished at 22 under for the tournament, successfully defending her title at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. Last year, Yamashita won the event in a sudden-death playoff. She bested her 72-hole scoring mark by four strokes this year.

"I didn't expect and think I am going to win today," said 25-year-old Yamashita, who has yet to lose on the LPGA when holding the 54-hole lead.

Miyu Yamashita of Japan speaks after winning the tournament following the final round of the Maybank Championship 2026 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club on November 01, 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A total of three players have successfully defended titles this season: Hyo Joo Kim (Ford Championship presented by Wildhorse Pass) and Jeeno Thitikul (Mizuho Americas Open) and Yamashita (Maybank).

Yamashita's mark of five wins in 46 starts as a member bests the record set by Ayako Okamoto, who needed 71 official starts to reach five wins between 1981 and 1984. Yamashita also won the Aramco Korea Championship on the LET earlier this month. In her last seven starts worldwide, Yamashita has four wins and three additional top-8 finishes.

China's Yan Liu gave Yamashita a good run on Sunday, carding 33 on the front nine, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 fifth. The runner-up mark's Liu's career-best finish on the LPGA and her lowest 72-hole score.

Frenchwoman Pauline Roussin-Bouchard tied for third with amateur Marisa Tojai of Thailand. At 17, Tojai was the youngest player in the field. Roussin-Bouchard's finish moved her up from No. 79 to No. 58 in the Race to the CME Globe, putting her in prime position to qualify for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship (top 60).

Mirabel Ting was the leading Malaysian player in the field. The former Florida State star finished at 5 under for the event in a share of 48th. Ting was the Player of the Year on the Epson Tour this season, earning her LPGA card for the 2027 season. She played this week on a sponsor invitation.
