'I have to continue to show my quality on the pitch' - Tanaka
Ao Tanaka of Leeds United

Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka has stated his ambition to "play more minutes and experience more years" in the Premier League after playing a crucial role in Daniel Farke's promotion-winning team.

The central midfielder made 43 Championship appearances in 2024-25 - scoring five goals and registering two assists - as Leeds United secured automatic promotion and clinched the second-tier title on goal difference.

"Everyone in Japan knows the Premier League is the best league in the world," Tanaka told BBC Radio Leeds. "It is a massive moment for our country because there are so many Japanese players currently playing in the Premier League.

"That's why I want to play more minutes and experience more years here. In order to do that, I know I have to continue to show my quality on the pitch so that is my target."

When asked about scoring his first Premier League goal against Chelsea last season, Tanaka replied: "I will never forget that moment. I feel that goal will be the best goal in my history.

"I hope I can add more goals, I want to score more big goals, but that will still be the best goal of my life."

The 28-year-old thanked the Leeds United fans for making him feel "so comfortable" at Elland Road, adding that it makes him "so happy" to hear his special chant to the beat of 'Tequila' by The Champs.

Lastly, on facing Bournemouth next in the Premier League, he said: "It is a massive opponent for us and it will be a tough game. We will put everything into it, especially as we haven't won in four games.

"We want to get the three points. We have to keep positive though and remember that if we get one point, it is a good point. I will deliver my best performance."
