The UNC men's basketball team barely avoided a complete embarrassment during Monday night's season-opener, surviving Western Carolina 80-72.
North Carolina (1-0) won Michael Malone's debut behind a balanced scoring attack, strong defense in the closing minutes and second-half free throw shooting. The Catamounts (0-1), facing a huge size disadvantage, out-rebounded the Tar Heels and continued giving themselves several, second-chance opportunities.
Next up for UNC: an upset-minded Wofford team that knows how to win in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels and Terriers will tip off at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 6 inside the Dean Dome.
Wofford lost its 2026-27 opener, 90-59, at top-10 Tennessee on Monday. The Terriers (0-1) struggled from the field and free throw line, looking severely out-matched against a team projected to go deep in NCAA Tournament play.
North Carolina fans might still have horrors about Wofford, though. The Terriers won in each of their past two trips to Chapel Hill: a 68-64 upset on December 15, 2019, preceded by a 79-75 win on December 20, 2017.
UNC needs strong guard play again to win Friday night. Starters Matt Able (18 points), Terrence Brown (14) and Neo Avdalas (13) all scored in double-figures against Western Carolina, while freshman wing Maximo Adams added 10 off the bench. The Tar Heels also need to find solutions down low, with Sayon Keita and Jarin Stevenson expected to carry heavy workloads again.

Monday was scary, but the Tar Heels survived. North Carolina played smart basketball down the stretch, while utilizing its talent and depth to distance itself.
Wofford received a good beatdown from Tennessee on Monday night, but the Volunteers are also an early National Championship contender.
UNC struggles on the boards against the Terriers, but shows noticeable improvement from Monday's opener. More Tar Heels play, allowing Malone to see the full potential of his roster once again.
