How Romeo Lavia maintained his professionalism last season despite FA Cup final heartbreak

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia is an amazing footballer but has also shown that he is a true professional.

Lavia played arguably his best game in a Chelsea shirt over the weekend after starring in his side’s 2-0 win against Manchester United. It was the second consecutive match where the 22-year-old was able to complete the full 90 minutes.

During the week, he also completed 90 minutes against Liverpool and scored his spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out at Anfield. Everyone knows Lavia is a top midfielder when he is fit, but the Belgian has also proven to be a top professional.

Romeo Lavia still did interview he promised to do despite injuring himself just before FA Cup final

Last season, Lavia missed Chelsea’s FA Cup final against Manchester City because of an injury. In the build-up to that game, it was arranged for Lavia to do an interview with some of Britain’s newspapers, only for him to get injured on the very same day.

Nevertheless, he still stuck to his arrangement instead of getting into a strop and spoke to the Daily Mail’s Kieran Gill and other journalists.

TalkingPoints

Romeo Lavia or Alex Scott? Who would Moises Caicedo rather start alongside and why?

Speaking about the interview on the Chelsea Press Room Podcast, Gill said: “I can remember the FA Cup final between City and Chelsea, and we had an interview set up with Lavia, didn’t we, for a few days before? And he was, if you remember, he was about two hours, maybe three hours late. And we were all hanging around waiting for him. But I think the reason he was late is because he’d actually injured himself in training that morning and he had to go and get treatment.

“He knew he was going to have to miss the final, but then he still came and did the interview with us. Obviously, he didn’t tell us he was injured. I don’t know why he still did the interview. Maybe he didn’t want to pull out of it after promising the club he’d do it. Maybe Chelsea didn’t want to tip off Man City that he was going to miss the final, which he then did.

“But he still did it, even if it was slightly awkward looking back now, because we were asking him questions about his fitness, and he knew earlier that day he had got injured and was about to miss the FA Cup final.”

Fortunately for Chelsea, Lavia is fit again and looks the healthiest he has ever been since joining the Blues. Lavia’s teammates all took to Instagram to praise him after his terrific performance against United.

Chelsea want to sign a new midfielder in January, and that is their priority. Alex Scott is Chelsea’s top target, and there is no doubt that Xabi Alonso could do with an incoming after losing Enzo Fernandez in the summer.

If Lavia can stay fit, though, that reduces the urgency of signing a new midfielder, or at least one who is going to cost £100m. Is Scott better than this version of Lavia we are currently seeing?

It is an interesting question. Of course, because of his injury record, it is a big if with Lavia.
