The 11 players with the most offsides in Premier League history - No.4 might shock you

Strikers are the best-paid players on the pitch and also the ones who get the most accolades. However, they can often be the most frustrating, especially when they miss big chances or struggle to stay on the right side of the opposition defence.

There aren't many more humbling feelings than wildly celebrating your front man smashing one into the back of the net, only to see it ruled out thanks to the linesman raising his flag. Or, in this modern day, a 10-minute VAR check.

Here, Express Sport takes a look at the most frustrating forwards who struggled to stay on the right side of the last defender.

Leicester City FC v Ipswich Town FC - Premier League
11. Jamie Vardy (183 offsides, 202 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Jamie Vardy was the king of running off the last defender's shoulder and firing one past the keeper.

However, he didn't always time those runs perfectly.

Southampton v Everton - Premier League
10. Shane Long (185 offsides, 313 appearances) (Image: Getty)

For the large number of matches that Shane Long played, that is not a bad return.

Pretty much an offside every other match for a forward who also had the defenders constantly scanning behind them.

Chelsea v Manchester United - Premier League
9. Romelu Lukaku (192 offsides, 252 appearances) (Image: Getty)

The first different type of striker on this list. Romelu Lukaku could come in short to link up play or drive in behind.

His 11 years in the Premier League meant he was destined to be in the top 10.

Manchester City v Everton - Premier League
8. Sergio Aguero (194 offsides, 261 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Sergio Aguero was one of the best finishers of his generation - and every goal seemed to come from inside the penalty box.

His clever movement was a nightmare for defenders, and he only needed a yard of space to get on the scoresheet.

Sunderland v Aston Villa - Premier League
7. Gabby Agbonlahor (195 offsides, 322 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Gabby Agbonlahor never fulfilled his potential after breaking through at Aston Villa as one of England's brightest young talents.

His pace used to cause defenders nightmares, but now he's perhaps more well known for his talkSPORT show and In The Mixer podcast than his on-pitch career.

SOCCER : Barclays Premier League - Manchester United v Hull Cuty
6. Robin van Persie (198 offsides, 280 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Robin van Persie single-handedly won Manchester United the Premier League title in the 2012/13 season, scoring 26 goals.

He had spent eight years at Arsenal, where his only piece of silverware was the FA Cup.

Liverpool v Leicester City - Premier League
5. Christian Benteke (200 offsides, 221 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Christian Benteke had a decade in the Premier League, starting at Aston Villa before earning a £32.5m move to Liverpool.

However, he flopped during his 12 months at Anfield and was flogged to Crystal Palace for £27m.

Manchester United v Bolton Wanderers - Premier League
4. Dimitar Berbatov (238 offsides, 229 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Dimitar Berbatov didn't possess great pace, so it's a surprise to see the Bulgarian on the list, never mind at number four.

The Bulgarian was one of the most technically gifted players ever to grace the Premier League.

He was often used to link up play and finish chances.

But it turns out he regularly fell foul of the offside flag - at an average of more than once a game, too.

3. Darren Bent (276 offsides, 276 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Darren Bent is another speedster who often got the timing of his runs wrong, according to his placement on this list.

He won the League Cup with Tottenham in 2008 but will be best remembered for the beach ball goal he scored for Sunderland against Liverpool.

2. Jermain Defoe (312 offsides, 496 appearances) (Image: Getty)

If you play almost 500 matches in the Premier League as a forward who loves running in behind, you have to make this list.

Defoe's offside-to-appearance ratio isn't bad for a player of his style; it's just that the sheer volume of matches means he was always going to be a frontrunner for the top spots here.

1. Emmanuel Adebayor (328 offsides, 242 appearances) (Image: Getty)

Emmanuel Adebayor is head and shoulders clear at the top of the offside charts - with half the number of appearances of Jermain Defoe!

Unlike most strikers on this list, Adebayor wasn't the speed merchant or poacher who usually risks being caught behind the defence.

He must have been consistently frustrating for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace fans to watch.
