Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League round-up

Ufford overcame a tough challenge from Harringworth this week to consolidate their position at the top of the Stamford and Rutland League table.

The score was tied at 9-9 at the midway point of the match, but Ufford’s Steven Gray completed a perfect 9-0 evening to guide his team to a 22-15 win.

Steve Williams earned seven points and Nash Tejani five, which included a fine comeback to beat Dave Reed from two sets down.

For Harringworth, Graeme McNaughton won twice, including a five-set win against the busy Tejani.

Bourne A were hampered by late unavailability, but the duo of Mark Conway and Matt Young secured sufficient points between them to defeat Tallington Bulls 21-13.

Richard Henry picked up points for the Bulls against both Bourne players but could not manage comebacks from 0-2 positions in these matches.

Stamford Free Church continued their promising season with a 25-7 win over Tallington.

Both Stuart Menzies and Adrian Bradley remained unbeaten in both singles and doubles, with John Chambers (four) also earning a win for Free Church.

For Tallington, Nick McDowall (four) and Kev Toomey (three) defeated Chambers, but the result leaves them firmly in mid-table.

Matt Young of Bourne A was unbeaten against Tallington Bulls.

A tighter match was played at Tallington Village Hall with Tallington Outsiders overcoming Swayfield Swifts 19-15.

As with the Ufford match, a mostly competitive encounter was decided by the performance of one player, in this case Matt Rayner.

Rayner carded a 9-0 individual evening and joined Adam Mezzatesta (four) to win the doubles too.

For Swayfield Swifts, the trio of Rod Goss (six), John Stanley (five) and Pete Coles (four) all scored well, but it was not enough against Rayner’s strong form.

MTTG Swayfield dominated in their match with Bourne B, winning 30-3.

Leigh Ware, Steve Smith and Andy Goodacre were all comfortable in their singles victories, with only Dariusz Kwiatkowski scoring a point before the final doubles, where he and Chris Gardiner picked up two further points for the hosts.

At Braunston, the village’s A-team showed little favour in their fixture with the B-team, winning 30-0.

Individual ends were at times close, but by this result, Cason Kang, Graham Cooper and Simon Maltby lifted the village's senior team into fourth place.

The league is looking to recruit more teams and players for future seasons.
