The Combined Counties League Division One leg of Football in Berkshire’s ‘story so far’ of the 2026/27 league season includes Berks County, Langley, Maidenhead Town and Woodley United

The Step 6 Combined Counties League Division One is speeding through its 2026/27 season with teams already approaching the halfway mark of games played in the 42 game season.

Partly, this will be because Step 6 divisions up and down the country are most prone to fixture backlogs at the end of the season due to (in no particular order), more groundshares, lower ground grading requirements and some of the largest divisions in the Pyramid.

Berks County

The Swords narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season in Ben Hall and Dan Money’s first season in charge. The club had been relegated the previous summer after a sole season at Step 5. Things are ticking over for the club who share at Ascot United’s Racecourse ground and Saturday saw a 3-1 win over Belstone, ending a run of three straight league defeats.

Goals certainly aren’t a problem for the Swords – and are healthily spread across the team – with the second highest total in the ‘Goals For’ column outside the teams currently in the play-offs, and defensively Money and Hall’s men have a good record but they are likely yearning for home fixtures having played 12 on the road and just five at home – this is likely a side affect of the ‘all weather’ surface the club have access to at Ascot.

Langley

Mick Woodham’s Langley are the top performing Berkshire side in the division but a couple of recent results have seem them drop to seventh after three consecutive matchdays topping the table. A 6-0 win at home to Bovingdon was followed by draws with EL Benfica and PFC Victoria London and a 4-0 defeat to Belstone.

Top scorer Kian Berry has 12 goals, putting him in the division’s top six and a return to playing home games at Slough Town’s Arbour Park this season appears to have put the side on a better footing after 14th and 13th place finishes in recent seasons.

Maidenhead Town

The new boys at Step 6 are finding their feet and recent weeks have seen two wins, two draws and two defeats across their last six league games. A Thames Valley Premier League side between 2016 and 2026 after reforming in 2004 in the East Berks Football League.

Currently groundsharing with Burnham following promotion last season, Maidenhead are in the Second Round of the Esoteric Recording Division One League Cup where they face Holmer Green in November after beating league leaders Brook House 2-1.

Newly promoted sides will always take a look at points totals to stay up and last season, Sandhurst Town’s 36 points was enough to survive. Maidenhead sit on 22 and will no doubt have aspirations to follow fellow former Step 7 sides Woodley United, Berks County and Langley with a play-appearance come the end of the season.

Woodley United

The Kestrels are under new management and have picked up two wins and a defeat in their last three games – that 2-0 reverse coming at leaders Brook House.

Eliot Whitehouse’s side are on an upward trajectory but have already seen a game postponed due to the significant reversal in weather fortunes this October. Alongside FC Deportivo Galicia and London Samurai Rovers, Woodley have played the least games (16) so far this season and will be eager to get points on the board when relegated Edgware & Kingsbury are the hosts.
