All four of Celtic’s centre-backs – Liam Scales, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Dane Murray – have earned a healthy amount of game time this season.

But it’s Scales and Carter-Vickers who have played the most minutes, including against Beşiktaş in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Player Games Starts Total minutes
Liam Scales 17 15 1,409
Cameron Carter-Vickers 14 13 1,176
Auston Trusty 11 10 927
Dane Murray 11 7 714

Despite Celtic beating Beşiktaş 3-2, there were many issues that came out of that match, including Scales’ issues on the ball.

In general possession, under pressure or under very little pressure, Scales is unable to retain the ball compared to his centre-back partner, and it’s proving to be a problem.

The stats behind Liam Scales’ issues on the ball against Beşiktaş

The issue you have is that Celtic are playing out from the back, Callum McGregor dropping deep, only to play a five-yard sideways pass to Scales.

That, in itself, is frustrating to watch, but it also seems as though the opposition are allowing Scales on the ball.

Even then, he is constantly losing possession of the ball, and the Irishman’s stats against Carter-Vickers in midweek was night and day.

Which Celtic centre-back has lost possession the most this season?

When you bring in Murray and Trusty and look at all four players’ stats in the Premiership, once again, it doesn’t make great reading for Scales.

When it comes to possession lost per game, Scales is the only one in double figures, with Murray, perhaps to the surprise of some, being the best out of the lot.

Player Average number of times possession is lost in the Premiership
Dane Murray 5.3
Auston Trusty 6.3
Cameron Carter-Vickers 8.9
Liam Scales 11.4
