Andy Robertson became a part of Tottenham Hotspur’s major squad revamp in the summer. The left-back was snapped up as a free transfer from Liverpool at the end of last season.
The Scotland skipper has proven to be a shrewd addition for Spurs, who initially wanted to sign him during the January transfer window. Andy Robertson has quickly become a key figure in Roberto De Zerbi’s defence, playing in seven of eight matches this season. He was generally brought in as a back-up to Destiny Udogie, but the 23-year-old’s fitness problems has seen Robertson get a run of games and impress.
The experienced defender impressed once again for the Lilywhites in the 2-0 away win at Chelsea at the weekend. He helped Spurs to a clean sheet whilst also showing plenty of adventure and enterprise going forward. The 32-year-old could have easily bagged an assist in the first half after creating a big chance for Omar Marmoush, but the forward failed to score.
Roberto De Zerbi said Tottenham “deserved” the win over Chelsea, crediting the mid-season trip to Marbella for team bonding and warm weather training. Now, Robertson has made his feelings clear over the game. The Scot claimed it was Tottenham’s “best performance” of the season. He went into more detail about what the North Londoners did right against Xabi Alonso’s side, explaining that belief was central to their success.
“Stamford Bridge is a difficult place to come, and it always is for every team that comes here, and obviously it’s a London derby and things like that so it adds to it, but I just think the most pleasing thing was how we played, how we went about our business today,” Robertson said to BBC Match of the Day (h/t BBC Sport).
“Everyone was outstanding, and then you get the rewards for that and the result you deserve because it’s not always happened this season. We’ve probably played better than what our results suggested, and we got the result Monday, and we wanted to really kick on from that.
“I think today was our best performance of the season.”
Spurs’ triumph against Chelsea capped off a transformative week that began with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City, lifting the club off the bottom of the table. The victory at Stamford Bridge was further proof of how far the Lilywhites have evolved mentally and tactically under De Zerbi, securing a result at a ground where they had not won since 2018.
Robertson has played a key role in the club’s upturn in fortunes, and with Udogie out with a minor knee problem, keeping the Scot fit and fresh will be important. With back-to-back wins, momentum is finally with Spurs, and it coincides with a winnable run of upcoming fixtures. Next up is another London derby against Crystal Palace at home, and De Zerbi’s side will back themselves to get a third win on the bounce.
