During the summer, Tottenham Hotspur underwent a squad overhaul to bounce back from a disastrous season. 10 players were brought in, and many more than that figure left the club.
Pedro Porro was one of the players who were linked with an exit. The Spanish international attracted interest from European heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City. Given the player’s importance to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, Tottenham acted decisively to secure his long-term future. They handed the right-back a new contract until 2031 to quell speculation surrounding his future.
However, in the last few weeks, reports have emerged that Pedro Porro is seriously contemplating an exit from Tottenham. As a result, Barcelona and Real Madrid have revived their interest in the 2026 World Cup winner. The Spanish heavyweights are now eyeing the possibility of luring the 27-year-old away from N17.
According to a report from Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona and Real Madrid face a difficult task to sign Porro, with the full-back unlikely to leave Tottenham during the January transfer window.
The Spurs star has caught the eye of the La Liga duo through his performances, especially at the summer’s World Cup. Porro’s mix of attacking flair and defensive diligence, experience and leadership skills make him an attractive profile for the Spanish clubs.
Barcelona are long-term admirers of the 27-year-old and have an issue at right-back at present. Jules Kounde hasn’t been in the best of form and is currently out injured, while Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart have been competing for the left-back spot. Over at Real Madrid, they have both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries at their disposal. But neither of those have convinced Jose Mourinho, forcing the Portuguese tactician to use Federico Valverde at right-back.
The report adds that getting Porro out of Spurs ‘appears to be an almost impossible mission.’ The player’s long-term contract, coupled with his strong relationship with Roberto De Zerbi and his current importance at the club, have made a potential transfer increasingly complicated.
That is actually a direct contradiction to what’s been said in the media. De Zerbi is a huge admirer of Porro and wants to retain his services amid interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. Then, there is the defender’s valuation. Recent reports suggest Tottenham are prepared to demand a substantial fee if they have to consider the player’s exit. They are currently relaxed about his situation, though.
For now, Porro is focused on regaining his spot in De Zerbi’s XI after returning from injury against Chelsea last weekend.
