Emeka Egbuka is considered a game-time decision for the Week 9 matchup against the Bears, leaving Baker Mayfield and the rest of Tampa Bay's receiving corps waiting to see whether their leading receiver will be available. According to head coach Todd Bowles, Egbuka's availability will depend on how he feels heading into Sunday's game. He's Tampa Bay's last two contests with a foot injury and concussion, but there's been some positive movement. After missing Wednesday's practice, Egbuka returned as a full participant Thursday and continued progressing Friday.
Getting him back would significantly boost an offense that could be asked to rely much more heavily on its passing game this week. Tampa Bay has won consecutive games with a dominant ground attack, including a franchise record 324 rushing yards against Atlanta. However, that kind of offensive performance is unlikely against a 6-2 Chicago team that has won three straight games. The Bears offer an interesting passing attack. Chicago has allowed 8.2 yards per pass attempt, ranking near the bottom of the league, and has surrendered 17 completions of at least 30 yards, the most in the NFL. Tampa Bay has opportunities to attack downfield, but the Bears also have a pass rush that can make life difficult for Mayfield.
If Egbuka cannot go, Chris Godwin becomes the obvious player who needs to take on a larger role. Godwin has 27 receptions for 243 yards this season and gives Mayfield a reliable option underneath. His experience and ability to work the middle of the field will be particularly important if Tampa Bay needs to move the chains consistently. Ted Hurst III and Tez Johnson are two other receivers who could see increased opportunities. Hurst has 11 receptions for 168 yards, while Johnson has nine catches for 178 yards. Both have shown they can create explosive plays, which could be especially valuable against a Chicago defense that has struggled to limit big passing gains.
Cade Otton also deserves attention and could become an important safety valve if Chicago generates pressure. Getting him involved in the short- and intermediate-passing game would give Mayfield another way to keep the offense moving. Ultimately, Tampa Bay needs more than its running game to carry it through this matchup. Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell have helped establish an identity up front, but the Buccaneers will need balance against a Chicago team that can put points on the board. Egbuka's availability could make a considerable difference. If he plays, Tampa Bay gets back its leading receiver. If he doesn't, Godwin, Hurst, Johnson, and Otton will have to help fill the void. Against one of the NFC's hottest teams, the Buccaneers cannot afford to lose their passing attack.
