Ben Johnson could expose coaching gap if he dominates Bowles defense

Sunday night's matchup against the Chicago Bears could become a telling example of how much the coaching staff matters in the NFL. The Buccaneers have mounted an impressive defensive turnaround over the past two weeks, but Todd Bowles is about to face one of the league's most creative offensive minds. If Ben Johnson finds ways to consistently exploit Tampa Bay's defense, it will raise uncomfortable questions about whether Bowles can make the adjustments needed to compete with elite coaching.

Johnson has helped turn Chicago into one of the NFL's most productive offenses. The Bears enter the matchup ranked third in total offense, averaging 387.3 yards per game, and eighth in scoring at 26.8 points per game. More importantly, quarterback Caleb Williams has looked increasingly comfortable since returning from injury. Over his last three games, Williams has completed 73.8 percent of his passes for 860 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson has found ways to distribute the football, create favorable matchups, and keep opposing defenses from settling into predictable looks.

That is where Bowles's challenge becomes particularly important. His defensive philosophy relies heavily on pressure, disguised coverages, and forcing quarterbacks into difficult decisions. But Johnson has shown he can anticipate defensive tendencies and adjust his play calling accordingly. Tampa Bay cannot afford to repeatedly send pressure only to leave openings for Williams to exploit. The defense will need disciplined assignments, clear communication, and in-game adjustments. The encouraging part for Tampa Bay is that this defense has played well recently. The Bucs rank third in total defense and fifth in scoring defense, while also allowing just 80 rushing yards per game. This unit has talent and production. However, facing Chicago will provide a much different test than the previous two weeks, particularly with Williams playing confidently and Johnson finding a rhythm with his offense.

A defensive scheme can work against certain opponents, but it takes consistent adjustments to stop quality teams. If Johnson can repeatedly put his players in favorable situations while Bowles struggles to counter, the contrast between the two coaching approaches will be difficult to ignore. Bowles has faced plenty of scrutiny in Tampa Bay, and another disappointing defensive performance would only add to it. Johnson has a chance to show what a creative, adaptable offensive mind can do with the right personnel. For Bowles, Sunday night is a chance to show that his defense can answer that challenge. If it cannot, the conversation about Tampa Bay's coaching situation will only get louder.
