GdS: The ‘quick-change artist’ – all the formations Amorim has used at Milan

One of Ruben Amorim’s biggest flaws previously was his inability to change, but AC Milan aren’t seeing that.

Milan were warned in the summer that changes and Amorim didn’t go together. The Portuguese coach had his system and he stuck by it, putting it above the needs of the team, according to some.

When he joined the Rossoneri, that same idea remained and the 3-4-2-1 was seen as the go-to. However, he’s not stuck by it…

Amorim learns to change

Gazzetta dello Sport called his style ‘chameleonic’ earlier today, and now, Gazzetta have taken a look at all of the formations used so far this season.

It started with his iconic 3-4-2-1 system, which was used heavily before the international break. However, in the final game before the break – the 3-0 win against Lecce – a 4-2-3-1 was tested.

Now, it’s been somewhat shelved, with Amorim happy to adapt on a game-by-game basis. Even in games, there are shifts, like against Atalanta this weekend.

The midfield has also been tough to decipher. The 3-4-2-1 offers a two-man midfield, but Amorim has also tested a three-man midfield with a 4-2-3-1 and the 4-3-3, even.

Adrien Rabiot has been essential to this, and it’s a decision which has helped Luka Modric substantially. Now, he seems more incisive and valuable than he did even last season.

It’s about working with what’s available and with Modric benefiting from two ‘guardian angels’, the team benefits.
