Kane Exits With Injury in Blackhawks 5-2 Loss To Avalanche
Kane Exits With Injury in Blackhawks 5-2 Loss To Avalanche

The Chicago Blackhawks (4-10-1) blew a multi-goal lead for the second straight game, giving up five unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche (9-5-1) at the United Center. The Blackhawks have now lost six of their last seven games

Wyatt Kaiser and Roman Kantserov scored to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead just 7:05 into the game, but the Avalanche defense and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood shut them down over the final 52:55. That’s now six of the last seven games in which they’ve failed to score three goals.

Nazem Kadri and Jaden Schwartz each scored twice for Colorado, who’ve now won 14 of 18 meetings with the Blackhawks since the start of 2022. Blackwood stopped 21 of 23 shots to earn the win in net, while Devon Toews scored the empty netter.

To make matters worse, the Blackhawks lost star forward Patrick Kane due to injury in the second period, with head coach Jeff Blashill announcing the future Hall of Famer will miss the next couple of games with an upper-body issue.

The Blackhawks have a three-game road trip ahead on the schedule, where they’ll face the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes. Even with Kane in the lineup, winning any of those games would be challenging. Now, the Blackhawks are put in an even greater bind without one of their premier forwards.

Here are highlights from the Blackhawks 5-2 loss to the Avalanche, dropping their 2026-27 regular-season record to 4-10-1 in 15 games.

First Period

Kaiser’s wrist shot from the point was deflected, but the puck still trickled across the goal line just 57 seconds in, giving the Blackhawks an early 1-0 lead. Kaiser has now recorded a point in three of his last four games and has two goals this season. Chicago has scored first in five of the last six outings.

Kantserov doubled the Blackhawks’ lead at 7:05, burying a pass from Bedard on a 2-on-1 rush for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. 2-0, Chicago. Kantserov extended his point streak to five games with the goal. Bedard extended his point streak to six games with the assist.

Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog put the puck on net from a sharp angle, and Kadri dove into the crease and knocked it home at 15:23, cutting the Blackhawks’ lead in half. 2-1. Toews extended his point streak to five games with the secondary assist.

Just 26 seconds later, Schwartz tied the game 2-2 with a quick wrist shot at 15:49. 2-2. The Blackhawks got caught jumping up ice in the defensive zone, and Hughes found Schwartz wide-open in a pocket of coverage.

The teams remained tied 2-2 after 20 minutes, with the Avalanche leading 14-4 in shots on goal and 13-5 in scoring chances. After the Blackhawks jumped ahead 2-0, the visitors were in complete control and never looked back.

Second Period

Kadri scored his second goal at 13:38 in the second period, putting the Avalanche ahead 3-2 on the power play. The Blackhawks killed their first two penalties of the period, but the third one burned them. Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to five games with the secondary assist.

Schwartz scored his second goal at 19:49, putting Colorado ahead 4-2 in the final seconds of the period. That made it four straight goals for the Avalanche after falling behind 2-0 early. Hughes recorded his second assist of the game.

After 40 minutes, Colorado led 4-2 with a 24-14 advantage in scoring chances.

Third Period

Near the 15:20 mark of the third period, Frank Nazar nearly cut the Blackhawks deficit in half with an outstanding individual effort, deking past Brett Kulak and launching a backhander toward the top of the net. The puck got behind Blackwood, but hit both the crossbar and goal post, then bounced out of harms way. Still 2-2.

With Knight on the bench for the extra attacker, Toews fired the puck into the empty net from the defensive zone and sealed the Colorado’s win at 17:38. 5-2, Avalanche. Five unanswered goals.

The final horn sounded at the United Center, sending the Blackhawks to their sixth loss in seven games. They’ll return to action next on Wednesday against the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena.
