Chelsea raked in the best part of £500m in the summer through player sales, but plenty went out on loan that could have been sold, and defender Mamadou Sarr is an example of that.
Throughout the summer, reports suggested Chelsea were open to a permanent sale for the 22-year-old Senegal defender. But instead, Sarr has completed a season-long loan move to Spanish side Sociedad.
He has started well in Spain, after an initial struggle with breaking into the starting XI. He started for the Spanish side in the Europa League on Thursday night against Lyon, but was subbed off at half-time.
Sarr had returned to Chelsea early from a loan at Clearlake’s other club, Strasbourg, during the 2025-26 season. Liam Rosenior wanted centre-back cover and reunited with Sarr, having had him in France.
TalkingPoints
Did Rosenior make a mistake handing Sarr his first Champions League start in THIS scenario?
But after a disastrous performance against PSG in the second leg of their 8-2 Champions League defeat, Sarr hardly got a look in. The defender has spoken this week of the difficult time he endured in London.
“I started to play, had some good matches, [but] PSG; that error came quickly. [Then] no news. No sign of life. The first week was horrible regarding the criticism. Rosenior, who brought me, was quickly ejected.”
Having read his comments in the media this week, Chelsea fans are not impressed. They want the £12.5m signing sold, with many of the opinion he’s not good enough and cannot make it at a club like Chelsea.

“You were given the chance to play, and you fumbled”, was the reaction of one Chelsea fan who clearly thinks Sarr simply isn’t Chelsea standard. Another agreed: “Not good enough; starts to blame everyone.”
That feeling was the same among the majority of Blues fans. Another posted: “These are players that will never reach a top, top level because they want to feel comfortable, no pressure, no high standards.”
@TheBlueDodger that’s what u get when u bought mid player, these kind of players always thought they’re good when actually they’re not even good enough to play against championship side… blame blueco for this kind of stupid signings…

Another made a very solid point. Sarr remains under contract, and Sociedad lack a permanent option. He posted: “Who is advising these boys? Why is he giving an interview like this when signed to Chelsea?”
Sarr struggled at Chelsea. A lack of minutes, rhythm, and pressure to thrive for a big club like Chelsea impacted his form on the pitch. These stats at Sociedad, Strasbourg and Chelsea prove that clearly.
| Defensive metric | Strasbourg | Chelsea | Sociedad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tackles | 1.03 | 0.00 | 1.80 |
| Interceptions | 0.62 | 0.90 | 1.20 |
| Blocks | 0.21 | 0.00 | 0.80 |
| Clearances | 4.48 | 4.50 | 3.72 |
| Duels won | 3.52 | 1.80 | 3.81 |
| Duel success | 52.0% | 33.3% | 65.5% |
Yes, his Chelsea appearances were brief last season, but it is clear that, with some momentum, playing for a club with less pressure suits Sarr. Maybe Chelsea fans have a point regarding the Blues defender.
Sarr signed an eight-year deal at Chelsea in the summer of 2025, and that means he has a contract with the club until 2033. But after these comments, it is unclear how Sarr will have any future at Chelsea at all.
