The Tampa Bay Rays returned to their home at Tropicana Field this season after Hurricane Milton forced them to play the 2025 season at George M. Steinbrenner Field. But it certainly sounds like Brewers closer Trevor Megill would have liked the Rays to take a different design approach to the replacement roof.
The Brewers hosted the Rays back in March. So the practice sessions ahead of this week's Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) were the team's first look at the new Tropicana Field roof. And though it was a costly project to repair the hurricane damage, the Rays generally went with the same look that the old Trop roof had.
It's not exactly an ideal situation for players trying to track a baseball. And, well, Megill voiced that frustration within an earshot of reporters on Sunday as the Brewers were struggling to pick up the ball against the roof.
He reportedly said:
"Whoever decided to make the roof the same goddamn color as the baseball is a (expletive) idiot.”
I mean, he does have a point. It can't be easy for players to track a white baseball with the backdrop of a white roof. And when you add in the lights and catwalks, it really isn't an easy fielding environment for players.
The Rays seem to manage with it just fine, though. No Rays outfielder committed more than three errors this season.
