Martin O’Neill has stated he will “demand more” from Celtic summer signing Joel van den Berg, who was in action for the B team on Tuesday night.
It was a busy week for O’Neill, who had met around 120 Celtic supporters at the Greenock Supporters’ Club the night before the B side’s cup tie against Ross County in Dingwall.
The Celtic manager, along with Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus, attended the young side’s match, which was beaten 2-0 by the League Two leaders.

Van den Berg played 72 minutes alongside summer loan arrivals Shim Mheuka and Landon Emenalo. It was a chance for them to gain valuable fitness given none are in the Europa League squad and will miss tonight’s clash with Besiktas.
O’Neill spoke of van den Berg, who was signed from PSV for £3.5 million. The 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance and is regaining fitness after injury.
The Hoops boss insists the midfielder has shown promising signs in training, and wants him to continue knocking on the first-team door.
He said (via The Celtic Way): “He’s just back from injury. I thought his training sessions had been very, very good, and I’m going to demand a lot more of him.”
A senior debut doesn’t seem too long away. The Celtic midfield has come under heavy scrutiny this season for being too passive, and while van den Berg isn’t going to solve any problems on his own, supporters will want to see him in action soon.
He arrived with a promising reputation back in his homeland; it’s now up to him to take his opportunity in the green and white.
