Why Bruno Fernandes was at Carrington as Michael Carrick crisis talks took place

Bruno Fernandes arrived at Carrington on Monday for treatment as his Manchester United team-mates enjoyed a day off. The captain's appearance added to the intrigue as boss Michael Carrick teeters on the edge of being sacked following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

United's season went from bad to worse on Sunday. Heading into a bout with the Cherries, they had only one Premier League win to their name and had just been hammered 4-1 by Como in the Champions League.

Skipper Fernandes was far from pleased with the tactical performance against the Italian side and spoke out about his manager in a post-match interview. He was dropped to the bench for the Bournemouth game and was not substituted on, though Carrick put this down to a pure footballing decision, refusing to relate it to his outburst.

Alas, a Fernandes-less United were no match for Marco Rose's side at Old Trafford and fell 3-0. Boos rang out at full-time and chants were aimed at the owners. Manager Carrick is now facing what seems like insurmountable pressure and will likely struggle to keep his job.

On Monday, crisis talks took place between the club's top brass at Carrington and conference calls were reportedly staged with minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer. But Fernandes was in the building too, as was Carrick.

According to the Daily Mail, Fernandes was at the training ground to undergo pre-planned treatment. Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte, who are all sidelined, joined him.

This came less than 24 hours after he was dropped by Carrick and in the wake of the 3-0 loss, his cryptic social media activity perhaps hinted at some discontent. Fernandes' Instagram account liked a post with the caption: "Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care."

Carrick's comments, however, hinted that the benching was just tactical. He said post-match on Sunday: "He's fit and available, but we decided to pick the team that we did today. Unfortunately for everyone, we didn't manage to get the right result."

The manager was also at Carrington on Monday and arrived in the afternoon to watch the Under-21s against Hull City as the crisis talks were ongoing in the background. It's unknown if he was spoken to by chief executive Omar Berrada or director of football Jason Wilcox.

Carrick was also present at the training complex bright and early on Tuesday morning, as his players reported back after Monday's off day, as per usual. It is not yet clear whether Carrick will keep his job.

Regardless, the 45-year-old was emotional after the Cherries beat his side and he said when asked if he expects to be sacked: "I totally understand the situation.

"I'm not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I'm carrying on as normal. I love this place and I'll always do what I feel is going to be best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything, really. That's kind of it, I'm not expecting either way.

"I take the responsibility, of course. I've said that and I accept the responsibility, whatever's going to happen results-wise, whether we win, lose, or draw. I'm in this position because I respect the position that I'm in and the responsibility is mine. What else can I say?"
