Final Step mixed With 'threat' For Rivals As Mamelodi Sundowns Signed Superstar Ecuadorian Player

Mamelodi Sundowns Advance in Pursuit of Ecuadorian International Jhegson Méndez

Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly made progress in their pursuit of Ecuadorian international midfielder Jhegson Méndez as the reigning South African champions look to strengthen their squad ahead of the second half of the 2026/27 season.

The 29-year-old defensive midfielder is believed to be a potential addition to the Brazilians as they prepare for the challenges of the Betway Premiership and continental competitions. His experience, tactical awareness and ability to protect the defence could make him a valuable option for the Tshwane giants as they aim to maintain their dominance in domestic football while competing against Africa's leading clubs.

Reports from Ecuador suggest that Sundowns and Méndez have discussed a possible three-year contract. His reported contract with Independiente del Valle is expected to expire in December 2026, potentially allowing him to join the South African champions as a free agent in January 2027.

However, several steps reportedly remain before the transfer can be completed, including medical examinations and the finalisation of contractual requirements. Sundowns have yet to officially confirm the proposed deal, meaning supporters should treat the reports as unconfirmed.

Méndez brings considerable international and club experience to the table, having played in several countries, including Spain, Brazil and the United States. His former clubs include Orlando City, São Paulo, Elche and Los Angeles FC, giving him exposure to different footballing environments and tactical approaches.

At international level, the midfielder has made 38 appearances for Ecuador's senior national team. He also represented his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, demonstrating his experience on football's biggest stage.

Nevertheless, a move to South Africa could raise questions about his international prospects. Ecuador has considerable competition for midfield positions, and Méndez would need to maintain his fitness and deliver consistent performances to strengthen his chances of remaining in the national team setup.

If completed, the signing could provide Sundowns with additional defensive stability, midfield depth and valuable experience. For now, the potential transfer remains subject to confirmation from the club.
