African Stars chairperson Salomo Hei remains confident that his team can eliminate Orlando Pirates from the CAF Champions League, despite heading into Friday’s second-leg encounter trailing 1-0 on aggregate.
The Namibian champions face a challenging task as they prepare to overturn the first-leg deficit and secure qualification for the next round of Africa’s premier club competition. However, Hei believes the contest is still open and insists his side has a realistic opportunity to progress.
Orlando Pirates secured a narrow victory in the opening leg, giving the South African giants an advantage ahead of the decisive return fixture. Nevertheless, the one-goal margin means African Stars can still turn the tie around with a strong and disciplined performance.
Hei’s confidence highlights his club’s determination to compete against one of South Africa’s most established football teams. African Stars will be eager to prove that they can challenge experienced opponents on the continental stage.
To stand a chance of qualifying, the Namibian side will need to be effective in attack while remaining organised defensively. Scoring an early goal could boost their confidence and put Pirates under pressure. However, they must also avoid conceding, as another goal for the Buccaneers would make their task considerably more difficult.
Pirates, on the other hand, will be focused on protecting their advantage and securing a place in the next round. The Soweto giants will look to use their continental experience, maintain defensive discipline and exploit opportunities on the counterattack.
Despite winning the first leg, Orlando Pirates cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. With only one goal separating the teams, defensive mistakes could give African Stars the opening they need to produce an upset.
Friday’s encounter is therefore expected to be an important test for both sides, with African Stars chasing a comeback and Pirates determined to finish the job.
