Red Arrows coach Chisi Mbewe has sent a clear message to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of Friday’s CAF Confederation Cup second-leg clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The Zambian tactician believes his side will progress to the group stages and rates their chances at eight out of ten.
The Airmen travel to Durban with a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Ndola. Mbewe says his team should have scored three goals in that match and has spent the week drilling his players on staying compact and clinical. He is confident they can finish the job on South African soil.
“I can assure you that this time around, Red Arrows is qualifying for the group stage. On a scale of one to ten? I would say eight out of ten,” Mbewe said. He knows Chiefs will come out strongly and has prepared his squad for a tough battle.
“We know that Kaizer Chiefs will throw all their ammunition that they have just to try and find a goal. We need to utilise the chances and ensure that we don’t allow them to score,” he added. The coach has stressed the importance of not becoming complacent despite the advantage.
Chiefs need to win by at least two clear goals at Moses Mabhida to advance directly. A 1-0 victory would take the tie to penalties. Should Red Arrows score even one away goal, Amakhosi would need three goals to go through. The match is set for 18:00 on Friday and is described as a do-or-die fixture for both sides.
Mbewe’s side created several chances in the first leg but failed to convert more than one. He believes better finishing and a solid defensive shape will be enough to see them through. The Airmen have been reminded that only half the job is done and that the real test now comes in front of a home crowd that will push Chiefs to attack from the start.
For Chiefs, the pressure is high after losing in Zambia. They must score early and often if they want to keep their continental hopes alive. Mbewe’s warning shows Red Arrows are ready for the fight and expect to leave Durban with a place in the next round. Friday’s result will decide which team moves forward.
