Cape Town City Beat Magesi to Top MFC Standings

Cape Town City moved to the summit of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after edging Magesi FC 1-0 at Athlone Stadium on Monday night.

Emile Witbooi scored the decisive goal in the top-of-the-table clash, ending Magesi’s unbeaten start to the campaign and extending City’s own run without defeat to eight matches.

The result lifted City to 20 points from nine matches, level with Magesi but ahead of them in the standings. Magesi, who began the night as the league leaders, slipped to second after suffering their first loss of the season.

Witbooi’s goal came less than a minute into the match, giving City an immediate advantage in a contest between two of the division’s early pace-setters.

The 18-year-old’s strike proved enough to settle a closely watched fixture and deliver a significant result for the hosts.

City entered the match looking to convert their consistent form into first place. Their unbeaten streak has now reached eight games, and Monday’s victory underlined their ability to collect points in a demanding promotion race.

For Magesi, the defeat marks a setback rather than a collapse. They remain level on points with City and will have an opportunity to respond in the matches ahead.

But losing their unbeaten record in such a pivotal meeting hands their rivals the advantage at the top of the table.

The narrow scoreline reflected the importance of the occasion, with the opening goal carrying extra weight in a clash between teams separated by little in the standings.

City protected their early lead and held on for three points that could prove valuable as the season develops.

The result also adds momentum to a City side that has steadily built its challenge. Eight matches without defeat provides a strong platform, while the win over the previous leaders offers an early measure of their title credentials.

Magesi will aim to recover quickly and reassert themselves in the promotion race.

For now, however, City have claimed top spot, with Witbooi’s early strike making the difference on a night when a single goal reshaped the top of the MFC log.
