Kanalelo Makes Honest Admission About Sundowns’ Champions League Exit
Marumo Gallants head coach Ronnie Kanalelo believes Mamelodi Sundowns’ elimination from the CAF Champions League could have created an opportunity for other clubs to challenge for the prestigious continental title, but he remains convinced that the Brazilians are still a formidable force in South African football.
Sundowns suffered a disappointing exit from Africa’s premier club competition after failing to progress beyond the second preliminary round against Angolan outfit Wiliete Sport Clube. The result was a significant setback for a club that has consistently demonstrated its ambition to compete among the continent’s elite.
For Sundowns, the early elimination represents a missed opportunity to pursue another major continental trophy. However, the outcome could also change the competitive landscape for their domestic rivals, who may see an opening to strengthen their own ambitions.
Kanalelo acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Sundowns’ elimination while recognising that the situation could have benefited other teams hoping to win the competition.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are very much sad to be out of the Champions League. It could have been an advantage for us, but it could have been a different opportunity for them for winning this competition,” Kanalelo said.
His comments reflect the complicated reality of competing against one of South Africa’s most successful clubs. While Sundowns’ continental disappointment may provide encouragement to their competitors, their quality and experience mean they cannot be underestimated.
The Gallants coach also understands that competing against Sundowns requires more than simply taking advantage of their setbacks. The Tshwane giants possess a squad filled with experienced players and individuals capable of changing the outcome of a match, even when the team is under pressure.
For Gallants, the challenge was to approach the contest with belief, discipline and determination rather than allowing Sundowns’ reputation to influence their performance.
Kanalelo had reasons to remain optimistic, considering that Gallants had previously eliminated Sundowns from the Carling Knockout at the same stage of the competition last season. They subsequently reached the final, where they were defeated by Orlando Pirates.
That previous success demonstrated that Sundowns can be beaten when opponents execute their plans effectively and take their opportunities.
However, the latest encounter produced a different outcome. Sundowns defeated Gallants 1-0 in the Carling Knockout last 16 on October 27, securing their place in the quarter-finals and providing a response to their disappointing continental elimination.
The result also highlighted the difficulty of turning an opponent's disappointment into a competitive advantage. Despite their Champions League setback, Sundowns retained enough quality and determination to progress in another competition.
Although missing out on the Champions League represents a major disappointment, Sundowns still have several opportunities to compete for silverware this season.
The Brazilians remain focused on their domestic commitments, including the Betway Premiership and the remaining cup competitions. Their response to the continental setback will be important in determining how successful their campaign ultimately becomes.
For Gallants, the encounter offered another opportunity to measure themselves against one of the country's leading teams. Their ambitions remain significant, but consistently challenging Sundowns requires strong performances rather than relying on the opposition's misfortunes.
Kanalelo's assessment captures the mixed emotions surrounding Sundowns' elimination. While their absence from the Champions League could have opened the door for other clubs, their quality means they remain dangerous opponents.
Ultimately, Sundowns' continental disappointment may have changed the season's outlook, but it has not diminished their determination to compete for trophies on the domestic stage.
