South African football has received another major boost after Mamelodi Sundowns captain and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams secured a place among the nominees for the prestigious 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Williams' inclusion on the shortlist recognises his outstanding contributions to South African and continental football, further strengthening his reputation as one of Africa's most respected goalkeepers.
The 34-year-old shot-stopper has continued to demonstrate his importance to Mamelodi Sundowns, where his leadership, consistency and ability to produce crucial saves have made him an influential figure.
His nomination comes during an impressive period for the Tshwane giants, who have enjoyed considerable success in African football, including their triumph in the CAF Champions League.
Williams is among 10 goalkeepers nominated for the 2026 award. The competition includes several established African stars, such as Morocco's Yassine Bounou, Senegal's Edouard Mendy, Algeria's Oussama Benbot and Egypt's Mostafa Shobeir.
Other nominees include Vozinha of Cape Verde, Yahia Fofana of Ivory Coast, Lionel Mpasi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, El Mahdy Soliman of Egypt and Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti of Morocco.
The competition is expected to be intense, considering the quality and experience represented on the shortlist.
For Williams, however, the nomination represents another opportunity to demonstrate the quality of South African football on the continental stage.
His journey has been particularly remarkable since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2022. He quickly established himself as a key member of the team and eventually became captain, earning admiration for his professionalism and leadership.
The Bafana Bafana captain has also played an important role in South Africa's international ambitions, providing experience and confidence between the posts.
His previous achievements at the CAF Awards make this latest recognition even more significant. In 2024, Williams made history by winning both the CAF Men's Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year awards.
Meanwhile, the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday, December 7, bringing together some of the continent's finest footballers, coaches and clubs.
South African football supporters will undoubtedly be hoping that Williams can once again rise above the competition and bring another prestigious continental honour home.
Although being nominated does not guarantee victory, his presence among Africa's leading goalkeepers confirms that his performances continue to command respect.
For Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, Williams' recognition is another proud moment for South African football.
