MOKWANA INHERITS SIMPHIWE TSHABALALA'S LEGACY AT KAIZER CHIEFS IN SPECIAL NAT URENA ARRIVAL
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 5 NOVEMBER 2026
Kaizer Chiefs' latest signing, Elias Mokwana, has inherited a special piece of the club's history following his arrival at Naturena, with the Bafana Bafana international set to wear a jersey number previously associated with one of Amakhosi's most celebrated players, Simphiwe Tshabalala.
Mokwana's arrival has generated excitement among the Chiefs faithful, but the significance of his new shirt number adds another interesting dimension to his move to the Soweto giants.
The 27-year-old winger will have the responsibility of carrying a number closely associated with Tshabalala, whose contribution to Kaizer Chiefs remains an important part of the club's history.
Tshabalala established himself as a household name during his time at Naturena, earning admiration for his technical ability, creativity and memorable performances. He also became a major figure in South African football through his contributions to Bafana Bafana.
For Mokwana, inheriting the jersey presents an opportunity to create his own identity while respecting the history attached to the number.
The former Sekhukhune United attacker officially joined Chiefs on Wednesday, 4 November, returning to South African football after spending two seasons abroad.
His football journey has taken him through different competitions, including spells with Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hazem.
During his time at Espérance, Mokwana gained valuable continental experience and helped the club enjoy domestic success, winning league and cup honours. He also featured in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
His experience in the Saudi Pro League further strengthened his profile, with the winger making 24 league appearances for Al-Hazem during the 2025/26 campaign.
Before moving abroad, Mokwana impressed in the South African Premiership with Sekhukhune United, where his pace, direct attacking approach and ability to challenge defenders attracted attention.
His signing is expected to provide Kaizer Chiefs with additional attacking options as the club continues its rebuilding process under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
The arrival also comes at an important time for Amakhosi, who have been searching for greater consistency and creativity in their attacking department.
However, wearing a jersey associated with a club legend brings its own expectations. Chiefs supporters will be hoping Mokwana can produce performances worthy of the number while establishing himself as an important member of the squad.
Although Tshabalala's legacy will always stand on its own, Mokwana now has an opportunity to write a new chapter in the history of the famous Gold and Black jersey.
For Amakhosi supporters, the hope is that this special inheritance becomes the beginning of another memorable story at Naturena.
