Rangers legend Ally McCoist has advised South African defender Olwethu Makhanya to remain at Ibrox and continue developing rather than rushing into a move to another club, despite growing interest in his services following an impressive start to life in Scotland.
The 22-year-old defender has attracted attention with his performances since joining Rangers, with his progress reportedly putting several clubs on alert. His displays have also raised the possibility of a future move to the English Premier League, where clubs are believed to be monitoring his development.
However, McCoist believes Makhanya should not allow the growing attention to distract him from his current responsibilities. The former Rangers striker feels the young South African still has plenty to achieve at the Scottish giants and would benefit from spending more time establishing himself at the club.
Speaking to talkSPORT Bet Online Casino, McCoist agreed with Pat Nevin's assessment of Makhanya's situation and explained why staying at Rangers would be the right decision at this stage of his career.
"I don't think Makhanya should be in any rush to go anywhere," McCoist said.
He acknowledged that the defender has made a very good start but also pointed out that playing for Rangers comes with enormous pressure and expectations. According to McCoist, Makhanya's recent experiences should remind him that there are no easy matches and opponents will increasingly look to test him as his reputation grows.
The Rangers legend also admitted that the defender's performances are likely to attract interest from other clubs. However, he believes the best response would be to remain focused, continue producing good performances and build a strong reputation at Ibrox.
He advised Makhanya to stay for a while, complete the job at Rangers and continue earning positive reports before considering another challenge.
McCoist's advice carries considerable weight because of his legendary status at Rangers, where he remains one of the most respected figures in the club's history.
For Makhanya, the situation presents an important opportunity to establish himself in European football. With potential Premier League interest emerging, the South African defender will have to remain focused on his performances and prove that he can handle the demands of playing for one of Scotland's biggest clubs.
Rather than rushing towards another transfer, staying at Rangers could give him the experience and consistency needed to attract even bigger opportunities in the future.
