PIRATES BOMBSHELL! Ouaddou Reveals What Buccaneers Must Fix Despite 4-0 CAF Champions League Victory

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 26 October 2026

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has identified important areas his team must improve despite their convincing victory over African Stars in the CAF Champions League, warning that the Buccaneers will need greater consistency and mental strength to compete against Africa’s top clubs.

The Soweto giants delivered an impressive performance in the second leg of their second preliminary-round encounter, securing a 4-0 victory over the Namibian side and booking their place in the Champions League group stages with a commanding 5-0 aggregate triumph. <Cite refs={["turn172221news8","turn172221search2"]}/>

However, the result did not completely satisfy Ouaddou, who believes his players still have considerable room for improvement as they prepare for the tougher challenges ahead in continental football.

Ouaddou Identifies Pirates’ Weaknesses

While Pirates demonstrated their attacking quality and ability to score goals, the coach was concerned about aspects of their performance, particularly their control of the game during the first half.

Ouaddou explained that his players produced a much-improved display after the interval, suggesting that maintaining the same level of concentration and composure throughout matches remains a key priority.

The coach’s assessment highlights the difference between producing an impressive result and delivering a consistently dominant performance against quality opposition.

With the Champions League group stages presenting a significantly tougher test, Pirates cannot afford to switch between strong and unconvincing spells if they want to challenge for continental honours.

Mental Strength Remains a Major Concern

Ouaddou has also stressed the importance of helping his relatively young squad cope with the pressure associated with representing one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.

According to the coach, several new players are still adapting to the demands and expectations that come with wearing the famous black-and-white jersey.

He believes technical ability alone will not guarantee success, particularly when Pirates face experienced opponents in high-pressure continental encounters.

The Moroccan mentor has even suggested that specialist psychological support could help his players manage their emotions and perform more consistently when the stakes are high. <Cite refs={["turn172221search0","turn172221search2"]}/>

His comments indicate that the technical team is focused not only on tactical improvements but also on developing the players’ confidence, discipline and ability to handle difficult moments.

Pirates Target Continental Success

Pirates’ return to the Champions League group stages represents an important step towards their ambition of reclaiming continental glory.

The club won Africa’s premier club competition in 1995, and supporters will hope the current squad can make another serious challenge for the trophy.

However, Ouaddou knows the preliminary rounds are only the beginning. The Buccaneers must now prepare for stronger opposition, demanding away fixtures and the tactical challenges that come with competing against Africa’s elite.

For Pirates, the message is clear: the 4-0 victory was a major achievement, but continued improvement will be essential if they are to turn their continental ambitions into reality.
