Sundowns ladies hit their first continental roadblock after goalless showdown in egypt

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies began their 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League campaign with a hard-fought goalless draw against Egyptian outfit Masar at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia on Sunday afternoon.

The South African champions had to settle for a point in their opening Group B encounter after failing to find the back of the net against a determined Masar side playing in front of its home supporters. Despite their efforts, neither team managed to produce the decisive moment needed to secure victory.

Sundowns Ladies entered the competition hoping to make a strong statement as they continue their pursuit of continental glory. However, their opening fixture proved challenging, with Masar showing determination and organisation to prevent the Brazilians from establishing their usual attacking rhythm.

Although the Tshwane-based outfit would have preferred to begin their campaign with maximum points, securing an away draw is still a valuable result, particularly in a competition where every point can influence the battle for qualification to the knockout stages.

The result also underlines the competitive nature of the CAF Women’s Champions League, where established favourites cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. Teams must demonstrate consistency, defensive discipline and attacking efficiency throughout the group stage to improve their chances of progressing.

For Sundowns Ladies, the immediate challenge will be improving their attacking performance in their upcoming fixtures. Their inability to convert opportunities against Masar means they will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to collect maximum points in their remaining matches.

The South African side boasts considerable experience at continental level and remains one of Africa's strongest women's football teams. Their pedigree and ambition will be important as they look to overcome the disappointment of dropping two points in their opening encounter.

With the group-stage campaign still in its early stages, Sundowns Ladies have an opportunity to respond positively, regain their attacking confidence and strengthen their position in the race for the continental title.
