Itumeleng Khune Claims Orlando Pirates' First Goal Against Chiefs Was Offside

Mandla Ncikazi says he left Orlando Pirates because he believed he had reached the end of what he could achieve there and was ready for a fresh challenge. After five years with the Soweto club, the experienced coach has returned to Golden Arrows, a team he says remains close to his heart.

Ncikazi joined Pirates from Arrows in 2021, becoming part of the club’s technical team. Questions about his role arose when he was not on the bench during the early part of the current campaign. Pirates later confirmed that he had undergone knee surgery.

He said his decision to move was not a sign of disappointment with Pirates. Instead, he described it as a chance to test himself in a different setting and work with younger players. Ncikazi also thanked the club and its supporters for the memories they shared during his time there.

“I’m grateful to the big institution and all the memories,” he said, adding that he felt he had achieved everything he could as a coach at the club. He said he wanted to take on a new phase of his career rather than remain in the same environment.

Ncikazi said he had no intention of retiring. He wants to continue coaching and take on the demands that come with the job. Returning to Arrows offered an opportunity to do that at a club with which he has a strong connection.

During his previous spell at Golden Arrows, Ncikazi said, the team reached its highest league position to that point and set several records. Those achievements, he suggested, helped draw him back to the club.

His immediate task is to work with the squad while the season continues. Ncikazi noted that the team has little time between matches to address areas that need improvement. With another game scheduled for Tuesday, he said the tight schedule is part of a coach’s responsibility.

The move marks a new chapter for Ncikazi after his time at one of South Africa’s most prominent clubs. He leaves Pirates with gratitude, while hoping to make another contribution at Golden Arrows.

Meanwhile, debate continues over Orlando Pirates’ opening goal in their 2-1 Soweto Derby win against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. Former Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune said the goal should have been ruled offside. An image shared on social media has been cited in support of that view, but the information provided does not confirm an official decision on the disputed goal. Pirates’ victory sent them to the top of the table, while the debate has continued among supporters.
