Former Kaizer Chiefs fitness coach Elsa Storm has shared an interesting story about Kaizer Motaung Jr, recalling an incident during training that demonstrated the former player's determination and willingness to push himself despite difficult conditions.
Storm revealed that the incident happened during Muhsin Ertugral's time at the club, when running sessions were considered an important part of the team's physical preparation.
According to the former fitness coach, Ertugral was particularly strict about training, with players expected to complete their running assignments rather than engage in unnecessary running exercises.
Storm explained that she and the players were once caught in heavy rain during a training session when lightning began striking nearby. Concerned about their safety, she suggested that everyone should stop exercising and move to a sheltered location.
However, Motaung Jr reportedly refused to abandon the session, fearing the consequences of returning to the coach without completing the assigned running.
“In Muhsin’s world, running for the sake of running meant punishment. And there we were, just running,” Storm said in a piece published on Algo Sports.
She continued by describing how the weather conditions became increasingly dangerous before she decided that continuing the exercise was no longer advisable.
“There was lightning and pouring rain. I told the guys it was getting dangerous and we should find shelter. Kaizer Junior stopped, his face soaking wet.
“‘Els, we will rather get killed here together by lightning than telling that coach we not running.’"
The revelation offers a glimpse into the demanding training environment at Kaizer Chiefs during Ertugral's tenure and the pressure players faced to meet his expectations.
Motaung Jr, who later moved into football administration, was among the players who experienced that demanding period at Naturena.
Storm's recollection has also highlighted the strict standards associated with Ertugral's coaching approach, although the incident illustrates the importance of prioritising player safety during extreme weather conditions.
