Aden McCarthy Faces Tough Defeat as Sabah FK Records First Loss of the Season

South African defender Aden McCarthy had a challenging day in Azerbaijan, as Sabah FK endured their first defeat of the 2026/27 Misli Premier League season with a 3-2 loss to Turan Tovuz on Friday.

McCarthy began the match on the bench but was substituted in during the second half when Sabah was already struggling, having conceded two goals before halftime.

This loss ended Sabah's five-match unbeaten streak in the league and represented a significant blow for the reigning champions, who had initially started the season on a positive note.

From the outset, Turan Tovuz exerted pressure on the visitors, taking the lead with a goal from Henrique Silva in the 27th minute. They quickly extended their lead to 2-0 when Jô Batista scored in the 30th minute, putting Sabah at a disadvantage as they entered the second half.

After halftime, McCarthy came on to help stabilize the defense and turn the game around. However, Turan Tovuz continued to dominate, with Batista scoring again in the 67th minute to make it 3-0.

Despite the dire situation, Sabah fought back. Joy Lance Mickels scored in the 70th minute, with Xander Severina adding another goal in the 87th minute, narrowing the deficit to 3-2.

In their bid for a late equalizer, Sabah pushed hard, but Turan Tovuz successfully held onto their lead for a vital home win.

For McCarthy, this appearance is part of his ongoing journey to gain experience in Azerbaijani football as he continues to develop his career abroad. The former Kaizer Chiefs youth player aims to make a mark at Sabah and has garnered interest from Bafana Bafana fans due to his performances.

Despite this setback, Sabah remains at the top of the league table with 20 points, although Qarabağ FK could surpass them with a win in their game in hand.

The outcome leaves Sabah with much to ponder as they look ahead to their next match, aiming to bounce back and ensure that one loss doesn't disrupt their overall momentum.

McCarthy and his teammates are determined to return to winning form as the Azerbaijani league season unfolds.
