Pitso Mosimane faces a major test as Bafana Bafana prepare for their crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Kenya. Although South Africa made an impressive start under the experienced coach, the challenge now is to turn that early success into qualification for the continental tournament.

The confirmation of the next fixtures has placed the spotlight firmly on Mosimane, with Bafana scheduled to host Kenya on 13 November before travelling to Nairobi for the return match on 17 November. Both encounters are expected to play a significant role in determining South Africa’s qualification prospects.

Bafana enter the double-header with confidence after winning their opening two AFCON qualifiers. They defeated Guinea 2-1 before recording a convincing 5-0 victory over Eritrea. Mosimane’s team also beat Egypt 1-0 in a friendly during the October international window, giving the coach further encouragement about the squad’s progress.

However, the difficult reality is that South Africa cannot afford to become complacent. Kenya are co-hosting the 2027 tournament and have automatic qualification, meaning only one additional team from Group D will secure a place at the finals. That leaves Bafana competing with Guinea and Eritrea for the remaining qualifying position.

Mosimane has already acknowledged the threat posed by Kenya, who are coached by former Bafana striker Benni McCarthy. The two South African football figures will now face each other in a contest that carries significant consequences for their respective teams.

The upcoming matches will test Mosimane’s tactical planning, squad depth and ability to maintain consistency under pressure. His successful start has raised expectations, but the real measure of his work will be whether Bafana can finish the qualifying campaign strongly enough to reach AFCON 2027.

For Mosimane, the mission is clear: build on the encouraging results, handle the pressure of the Kenya fixtures and ensure South Africa do not miss out on the tournament.
