Kaizer Chiefs have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing to Zambian side Red Arrows in a penalty shootout.

The Soweto giants entered the continental encounter hoping to progress to the next round, but their campaign has now come to an end following the decisive shootout.

The elimination represents a major setback for Chiefs, who were targeting progress in continental competition after returning to the CAF Confederation Cup.

Chiefs had travelled into the tie knowing that a positive result was essential to keep their continental ambitions alive. However, Red Arrows proved to be a difficult opponent, with the contest ultimately requiring penalties to determine which team would advance.

The defeat will raise questions about Chiefs’ ability to convert their continental ambitions into results, particularly as the club continues to rebuild under head coach Fernando da Cruz.

The coaching staff must now turn their attention to domestic commitments, with the Betway Premiership and other competitions offering opportunities to respond to the disappointment.

For Red Arrows, the victory provides a significant boost as they continue their campaign in Africa’s secondary club competition.

Chiefs supporters will be disappointed to see their team eliminated, especially given the expectations surrounding the club’s return to continental football.

The focus now shifts to how Da Cruz and his players respond to the setback, with the club needing to regain momentum in their remaining fixtures.
