Kaizer Chiefs have explained why goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner was left out of their squad for the crucial second-leg encounter against Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium, following speculation surrounding his recent on-field confrontation with teammate Reeve Frosler.
Leaner’s absence from the matchday squad sparked questions among supporters, particularly after footage of his heated exchange with Frosler circulated on social media following Amakhosi’s 1-0 defeat in Ndola, Zambia.
With the return fixture already under way, speculation quickly spread about whether the incident had influenced the goalkeeper’s omission.
However, Kaizer Chiefs moved to clarify the situation, stating that Leaner had sustained an injury during training on Thursday and was consequently unavailable for Friday’s match.
The club explained that the injury occurred during preparations for the important fixture, putting an end to speculation that his absence was necessarily linked to the disagreement with Frosler.
In a statement, Chiefs confirmed that Leaner would miss the encounter after picking up the knock during training.
The developments come at an important time for Chiefs as they seek to strengthen their position in continental competition. Following the narrow defeat in Zambia, the Soweto giants entered the return leg needing a strong performance in front of their home supporters.
The viral exchange between Leaner and Frosler had attracted considerable attention, with supporters questioning the atmosphere within the squad. However, the club’s explanation points to an injury as the stated reason for the goalkeeper’s omission.
There has been no confirmation that disciplinary action was taken against Leaner over the incident.
Chiefs supporters will now be watching closely as the team continues its continental campaign, with attention also turning to the goalkeeper’s recovery and possible return to action.
