Heartbreaking: Swallows Legend Les Grobler Passes Away As Son Bradley Grobler And SA Football Mourn

South African Football In Mourning: Swallows Legend Les Grobler Dies At 64 As Tributes Pour In For Bradley Grobler’s Father

South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Moroka Swallows striker Les Grobler, a respected figure whose contribution to the domestic game earned him a place in the memories of supporters.

Grobler, who was also the father of Stellenbosch FC forward and former Bafana Bafana international Bradley Grobler, reportedly passed away on Monday at the age of 64. His death was reported by SuperSport on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, prompting renewed attention to the legacy he leaves behind in South African football.

The news is particularly painful for the Grobler family, with Bradley continuing his professional career in the Betway Premiership. Messages of condolence have also highlighted the loss felt by the wider football community, where former players and supporters remember those who helped shape the local game across different generations.

A Career Remembered At Moroka Swallows

Les Grobler made his mark as a goalscorer during an era when South African club football was producing memorable rivalries and celebrated cup competitions.

He joined Moroka Swallows in 1989 and continued the impressive scoring form he had shown at Rangers. During his first season with the Birds, Grobler scored 16 goals in all competitions and played a role in their Bob Save Super Bowl triumph.

Swallows defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 5-2 in a replay of the 1989 final at Soccer City, with Grobler scoring the final goal in the closing minute. He later celebrated another Super Bowl success in 1991, when Swallows edged Jomo Cosmos 2-1 in the final.

Before joining Swallows, Grobler had been instrumental in Rangers' league title success in 1986. His partnership with Shane MacGregor helped drive the Johannesburg club's campaign, with Grobler scoring 19 goals during that championship-winning season.

He was known for his aerial ability, free-kick expertise and athleticism, qualities that allowed him to contribute in both midfield and attacking positions.

Beyond his playing career, Grobler remained involved in the development of football. He began coaching at Boksburg in 1992 and later worked with Silver Stars as an assistant coach before taking up a development role at Highlands Park, where he also coached the club's DStv Diski Challenge team.

His journey from player to coach reflected a commitment to the sport that extended beyond his own achievements on the pitch.

His connection to Bradley also forms part of his legacy. The younger Grobler has built a long career as one of South Africa's recognised strikers, having played for clubs including SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United before joining Stellenbosch FC in August 2026.

The loss of Les Grobler is a reminder that football's history is built not only on trophies and goals but also on the people whose dedication helps shape clubs, players and future generations.
