Bafana Bafana could face a major midfield selection dilemma ahead of their upcoming matches against Kenya if Teboho “Tebza” Mokoena is ruled out through injury.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder remains an important figure for South Africa, particularly because of his ability to win possession, dictate the tempo and help the team transition quickly from defence into attack. His potential absence would therefore leave head coach Hugo Broos with the task of finding a suitable replacement without disrupting the team’s overall balance.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso recently provided an update on Mokoena’s injury, leaving some uncertainty over whether the midfielder will recover in time for the upcoming international fixtures. Further medical assessments and his rehabilitation progress are expected to provide a clearer indication of his availability.
Should Mokoena be unavailable, Broos could consider several midfield combinations. One possible option would be a three-man midfield consisting of Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas and Thalente Mbatha in a 4-3-3 formation.
Sithole could operate in the deeper role, providing defensive protection, recovering possession and helping maintain the team’s shape. Aubaas could bring energy and mobility as a box-to-box midfielder, contributing during both defensive and attacking transitions.
Mbatha, meanwhile, could be given greater responsibility in progressing the ball and connecting midfield with the attacking players. His ability to carry possession forward could help Bafana retain their attacking threat despite Mokoena’s absence.
However, the suggested combination remains speculative, with Broos likely to consider fitness, current form and tactical requirements before making his final decision.
Mokoena’s absence would not necessarily force Bafana to abandon their preferred style. Instead, his responsibilities could be shared among several midfielders as South Africa seeks to maintain its structure and competitiveness against Kenya.
Until Mokoena’s fitness is confirmed, no replacement or starting XI can be considered certain.
