Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has stressed the importance of mental strength as he prepares his young squad for the challenges of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage. The coach believes that technical ability alone will not be enough for the Buccaneers to compete against some of Africa’s strongest clubs, especially when matches become difficult and pressure begins to build.
Pirates secured their place in the group stage after an impressive performance against Namibian side African Stars FC in the qualifying rounds. The South African club recorded a 1-0 victory in the first leg before delivering a stronger performance in the return match to complete a convincing 5-0 aggregate win. The result confirmed their progress and raised expectations among supporters hoping to see the team make a strong impression on the continent.
Despite the comfortable qualification, Ouaddou understands that the group stage will present a different level of competition. Pirates are likely to face more experienced opponents who have developed the discipline and composure needed to perform consistently in demanding continental matches.
The coach has identified the mental side of the game as an important area of development for his players. With several young footballers in the squad and new arrivals still adapting to the team, building confidence and learning to handle pressure will be essential. Representing a club as big as Orlando Pirates also comes with high expectations, which can affect players who are still gaining experience at the highest level.
Ouaddou wants his team to remain calm during difficult moments, make sensible decisions under pressure and maintain concentration throughout matches. He has also recognised the possible value of professional psychological support to help players develop the mental skills required for important fixtures.
Pirates have a proud history in African football, having won the CAF Champions League in 1995. The club also reached the semi-finals of the competition during the 2024/25 season under former coach Jose Riveiro. These achievements provide a strong foundation, but the team will need to prove itself again against the continent's leading sides.
Their previous disappointment, when they were eliminated by FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo during last season's preliminary rounds, also serves as a reminder of how quickly continental campaigns can end. Ouaddoo will want his players to learn from such setbacks and approach the upcoming matches with greater maturity.
The group-stage draw is scheduled to take place in Cairo on Wednesday, October 28, giving Pirates a clearer picture of the challenges ahead. The opponents they are drawn against will help determine the demands of their campaign, including the difficulties of playing away from home.
As the competition approaches, Ouaddou's focus remains on building a confident, disciplined and mentally prepared squad. If Pirates can combine their attacking quality with greater composure and consistency, they will hope to make a strong challenge for continental honours and move closer to repeating their historic success.
