Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has spoken out following head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's criticism of the team's finishing in Tuesday night's 3-0 Carling Knockout Cup victory over Milford FC.
Despite Pirates' progress, Ouaddou was dissatisfied with the performance. The fact that they had 24 scoring opportunities was something he brought up. The Moroccan coach remarked that his team appeared selfish at times and questioned why some players failed to give the ball to teammates who were in better positions. If the team wants to be in the conversation for major prizes, he said, they can't be satisfied with three goals when more is conceivable.
During Thursday's media session in Randburg, Sibisi stated that the coach's remarks have been misunderstood. "Our coach has set a standard at the club that has been misunderstood. If we can score eight goals, why settle for scoring three?" The captain emphasised the importance of pushing forward and scoring as many goals as possible.
According to the defence, the players have heard the coach and are reacting positively. The changing room is devoid of pouting. According to Sibisi, every additional goal matters because the Betway Premiership title might still be decided by goal differential. Who knows? Maybe goal differential will decide the league winner in the end. We will take it as a motivation to work on our goal-scoring, and the lads are responding well to the coach's comments. Therefore, I believe everything is going well thus far.
The Pirates' play this season has been outstanding. They have won their last five games in a row across all competitions without allowing a single goal, putting them in second place in the league with 22 points after eight matches. The team is now preparing for this weekend's Soweto Derby match against Kaizer Chiefs.
It is clear from Sibisi's remarks that the team has agreed to Ouaddou's demand for improved performance. The captain clarified that the coach is fine with victory, but that he wants his squad to make more of an effort when they have scoring opportunities. The Pirates, in Sibisi's opinion, deserve that kind of play.
