10-Men USG Move Into Second as Mofokeng’s Side Holds On Against Beveren

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise showed real fighting spirit on Saturday evening when they beat SK Beveren 2-1 away from home, even though they played more than half an hour with only 10 men. The three points lifted the Brussels side into second place in the Belgian Pro League, just one point behind the leaders.

The match at the Freethielstadion started evenly, but Union broke the deadlock just before half-time. Louis Patris finished off a move to make it 1-0 to the visitors. After the break, things got difficult for the visitors. Substitute Dylan Aquino was sent off in the 53rd minute after a bad challenge. Many teams would have dropped their heads at that stage, but Union did the opposite.

Minutes later, Guilherme Smith scored a well-taken goal to double the lead. Beveren hit back almost straight away when Arno Verschueren pulled one back, making it 2-1. From there, Union had to defend carefully with one man short. They managed to hold on until the final whistle, showing good organisation and character under pressure.

South African winger Relebohile Mofokeng started the game in the Union team and played for most of the match before being substituted in the 84th minute. It was a quiet night for the Bafana Bafana attacker, who did not get on the scoresheet. Still, his presence on the pitch added energy and options to the side. The 22-year-old has settled well since joining Union from Orlando Pirates earlier in the year. He has already scored goals and created chances in the league and in Europe, and he continues to earn regular starts.

This result keeps Union in a strong position as they chase a place at the top of the table. For Mofokeng, nights like this are part of growing as a player in a tough European league. Even when he is not the star of the show, he is learning what it takes to help his team win important matches. Fans back home will be happy to see another South African continuing to make his mark overseas while his club stays competitive at the top end of the Belgian league.
