After losing the CAF Confederation Cup match against Red Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz vented his frustrations, claiming his club, Amakhosi, had enough scoring opportunities to secure a comfortable victory.
The Chiefs were hell-bent on reversing their 1-0 loss in Zambia going into the second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The match went to a penalty shootout after the Soweto giants won 1-0 in ordinary time, tying the score at 1-1.
Unfortunately, Amakhosi were unable to achieve their desired outcome, which put a stop to their aspirations of advancing to the group stage. It was especially disheartening to lose since there were plenty of chances for the squad to score.
Da Cruz, speaking after the match, said that his side had most of the possession and had many scoring chances, but they had missed them.
We were the better team and produced more scoring opportunities. Although we were defeated on penalties, it seems that our previous defeat was due to our inability to capitalise on several scoring opportunities. We should have won by a score of three or four goals, according to Da Cruz.
The Chiefs' incapacity to turn their dominance into goals was a major issue throughout the match, and his remarks brought it to light.
The coaching staff would have rather that the players capitalise on the scoring chances they set up, even if the squad did manage to score once. The Chiefs might have qualified for the playoffs during normal time and avoided the uncertainty of a penalty shootout if they had scored more goals.
The outcome will be tough to take for the team and its fans to accept, particularly considering how hard the players battled to come back from behind in the first leg. The Chiefs' European aspirations were eventually decided by the penalty shootout, even though they managed to win the return match over the regular 90 minutes.
Additionally, Da Cruz's evaluation highlights the significance of clinical finishing in elimination matches. A team may strengthen its position by controlling possession and generating opportunities, but such efforts will not be worthwhile unless they result in goals.
The loss makes one wonder how well Kaizer Chiefs can finish goals and if they can seize crucial chances when the stakes are greatest.
Based on his comments, it seems like the coach thinks his team could have won the match easily if they had only scored the winning goal.
Amakhosi must now focus on their other obligations and address the shortcomings highlighted by the match, as their CAF Confederation Cup campaign came to a disappointing conclusion.
If Da Cruz and his technical staff want to see the Chiefs improve their performance in upcoming games, they will have to focus on the team's finishing.
