"The opportunity to help the next generation of South African footballers reach greater heights," says Papi Zothwane, a former Bafana Bafana midfielder. This includes helping them obtain national team call-ups and negotiating transfers to clubs overseas.
Although he and his contemporaries were unable to accomplish much during our playing days, Zothwane, a South African football legend, thinks that new players should be given the chance to reach their full potential.
The ex-midfielder has made it plain that he wants to do more than just coach club footballers. He hopes that young players will one day play for their country and make a name for themselves on the global scene.
Unfortunately, Zothwane's squad was unable to compete due to a lack of skill, but he still wants his players to "go abroad" and play for the national team. "Rele has done it," he said.
He clearly wants young South African players to realise their full potential and seize chances that may help them climb the professional ladder, since his comments reflect that ambition.
Rele, who is commonly known as Relebohile Mofokeng, is a promising young player from South Africa who has been drawing a lot of notice for his impressive play and ability to play at a higher level.
For Zothwane, seeing the development of young players is a chance to assist the next generation in realising dreams that were unmet during his own playing career.
The former star's technical skill and imagination in the middle of the pitch brought him great acclaim throughout his tenure with teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
His time spent playing at the top level of domestic football has given him a unique perspective on the struggles that young players have while trying to realise their full potential.
Another point made by Zothwane is the significance of developing young players' abilities, giving them chances to play to their strengths, and letting them play with confidence.
South African football has seen a crop of talented youths in recent years, but the country's clubs, coaches, and development organisations still have a ways to go before they can claim credit for turning these players into regulars on the national team and opening doors for them internationally.
This is a very personal goal for Zothwane. The prospect of inspiring younger athletes to achieve more success than he achieved drives him, rather than reminiscing about missed possibilities.
At the end of the day, his conclusion is quite clear: the failures of one generation should not hold the previous generation behind. On the contrary, they need to be pushed to make it to the national team, seek out possibilities abroad, and live up to the expectations set by their elders.
