Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has reportedly made history by becoming the seventh South African player to score in the UEFA Champions League after finding the net for Azerbaijani side Sabah FK against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The 22-year-old defender achieved the milestone despite Sabah suffering a 2-1 defeat against the German giants. His impressive performance, however, provided a memorable moment for South African football fans and placed him alongside some of the country's most respected players to have scored in Europe's premier club competition.
Dortmund made a strong start to the encounter, with Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy opening the scoring in the 10th minute. Sabah faced early pressure but managed to respond before half-time through McCarthy.
The former Amakhosi youngster rose above Dortmund's defenders to connect with a well-delivered free-kick from Tymoteusz Puchacz, powering a header into the back of the net in the 39th minute. The goal was reportedly McCarthy's first Champions League strike in just his third appearance in the competition.
However, Sabah could not maintain their momentum after the break. Guirassy completed his brace in the 53rd minute, restoring Dortmund's lead and securing victory for the Bundesliga outfit.
Despite the defeat, McCarthy continued to contribute defensively, demonstrating his ability to compete against top-level European opposition.
His reported achievement places him in distinguished company alongside former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy, former Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar and ex-Ajax Amsterdam star Thulani Serero, who also made their mark in European football.
Since leaving Kaizer Chiefs for Sabah FK, the young defender has continued gaining valuable international experience. His aerial strength and contribution during set-pieces have also highlighted his potential to influence matches beyond his defensive responsibilities.
At 22, McCarthy still has considerable time to develop his game and establish himself in European football. Although Sabah suffered defeat against Dortmund, his memorable goal represents an encouraging milestone.
The claim that he is the seventh South African to score in the Champions League has not been independently verified.
