Revealed Relebohile Mofokeng Rejected R15,000 Mamelodi Sundowns Offer to Join Orlando Pirates
Relebohile Mofokeng reportedly turned down a R15,000 offer from Mamelodi Sundowns before choosing Orlando Pirates, according to revelations by his father, Sechaba Mofokeng. The disclosure has sparked interest among South African football supporters, highlighting a crucial decision that helped shape the career of one of the country's most exciting young talents.
According to Sechaba, Sundowns were interested in signing his son during his development years and wanted him to begin his journey with their Under-19 team before potentially progressing to the reserve side competing in the DStv Diski Challenge.
The proposed arrangement reportedly involved the R15,000 offer, with Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe keen to see the youngster develop within the club's structures. However, despite the financial incentive and the opportunity to join one of South Africa's most successful clubs, Mofokeng ultimately chose a different path.
The talented attacker joined Orlando Pirates, where his development accelerated as he worked his way through the club's youth system. His progress eventually earned him a senior-team debut in May 2023, marking the beginning of his rise to prominence.
Mofokeng quickly established himself as an exciting attacking player, impressing supporters with his dribbling ability, close control, creativity and confidence in one-on-one situations. His performances also helped strengthen his reputation as one of the country's brightest prospects.
His development earned him opportunities with Bafana Bafana, further demonstrating his growing influence in South African football.
In July 2026, Pirates reportedly confirmed an agreement for his transfer to Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, representing another significant milestone in his career.
The revelation offers an interesting glimpse into the decisions behind Mofokeng's rise. His journey highlights how choosing the right development environment and receiving opportunities to progress can be just as important as financial incentives when shaping a young footballer's future.
