Sundowns Move To Secure Malibongwe Khoza’s Future As European Clubs Circle The Rising Defensive Star
PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly working to secure the long-term future of young defender Malibongwe Khoza amid growing interest from clubs across Europe.
The 22-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of the Brazilians’ standout performers this season, with his impressive displays at the heart of the defence attracting attention beyond South Africa. According to reports published on 2 November, Sundowns are looking to negotiate a new long-term contract with the promising defender as they seek to ward off potential approaches from overseas clubs.
Khoza’s rise has been particularly notable after he struggled to secure regular minutes towards the end of the previous campaign. Injuries to established defenders Grant Kekana and Keanu Cupido created an opportunity for the youngster, and he has responded with a series of composed performances.
His defensive awareness, physical presence and confidence on the ball have helped him establish himself as an important option for head coach Miguel Cardoso. The defender’s growing influence has also strengthened Sundowns’ belief that he can become a key figure in the club’s plans for the coming seasons.
European interest in Khoza is not entirely new. Earlier reports linked Belgian side KAA Gent with the South African international, while Austrian club SV Ried and French Ligue 2 outfit FC Nantes were also said to be monitoring his progress.
Gent were reportedly considering defensive reinforcements after an injury setback involving centre-back Mouhamed Ngom. Transfer reports suggested that Khoza had emerged as a possible target, although no official offer or agreement has been confirmed.
The interest reflects the growing attention South African footballers are receiving from European clubs, particularly players who combine youth, athletic ability and experience at senior level.
Khoza progressed through Sundowns’ development system and made his senior debut in 2024. Since then, he has continued to gain experience with the first team and has earned opportunities with Bafana Bafana.
The club’s reported contract initiative also reflects its longer-term defensive planning. Sundowns are believed to view Khoza and fellow young defender Khulumani Ndamane as important prospects who could help shape the team’s backline in the years ahead.
With experienced defenders still part of the squad, the emergence of younger players gives the technical team options for succession and squad continuity. Retaining Khoza would allow Sundowns to continue developing him while protecting the club’s position should formal transfer interest materialise.
For the player, a potential move to Europe could represent an important career opportunity. However, remaining at Sundowns would also offer the chance to continue gaining first-team experience, competing for domestic and continental honours, and developing in a familiar environment.
At this stage, the reported contract talks have not resulted in an official announcement, and the exact length of Khoza’s current agreement has not been publicly confirmed.
Sundowns’ immediate priority remains their busy fixture schedule, but the club’s reported move to secure the defender’s future suggests they are keen to avoid uncertainty surrounding one of their rising talents.
