South Africa's under-15 national team has secured a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, following a 6-2 victory over Malaysia on Wednesday, bringing them closer to the quarter-finals.

Camden Schaper shone during the match, netting four goals and demonstrating his status as one of the team's top talents. Tshiamo Mashishi and Alex Van Der Werf each added a goal to finalize the score at 6-2. From the outset, the South African team controlled the game and maintained their lead without facing significant threats.

This success follows a strong performance in their group, where South Africa finished second in Group A. They achieved victories against Maldives (8-0) and Anguilla (13-1), and had a draw with Estonia. Their standout moment came with a 3-2 win over France, which helped secure their advancement to the next stage. The team has demonstrated effective attacking play and teamwork throughout the tournament.

The FIFA U15 World Cup is a relatively new event, featuring an 8-a-side format on smaller pitches, designed to provide young players with more touches on the ball. The primary emphasis is on enhancing technical skills and football intelligence rather than simply focusing on results. Head coach Selekedi Mogale has utilized these matches to give players valuable experience against diverse international teams.

South Africa is now awaiting their next opponent, who will be determined by the outcome of the match between Jamaica and Portugal. A victory in that match would propel them into the quarter-finals and sustain their hopes for a deep tournament run.

The players have already brought pride to their country. Their impressive wins against formidable teams like France, along with their decisive finishing against Malaysia, highlight the emerging talent in South African football. Fans at home will be keenly watching the next match, while the U15 squad can take a moment to celebrate their hard-earned advancement to the last 16.
