Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has outlined his approach to improving the abilities of young talents Mpho Padime and Simphiwe Masilela as the Soweto-based club prepares for the 2026/27 campaign.
The two youngsters recently showcased their potential during Pirates' emphatic 4-0 win against African Stars in the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round encounter. The victory gave the Buccaneers a 5-0 aggregate triumph, securing their progression to the group stage of the competition.
Padime made his contribution by scoring Pirates' third goal, while Masilela provided an assist. Their performances highlighted the attacking qualities both players could bring to the senior team as they continue working towards establishing themselves at the club.
Despite their promising displays, Ouaddou understands that developing young footballers involves more than recognising their natural abilities. The coach believes they need appropriate guidance, clearly defined responsibilities and sufficient opportunities to adjust to the demands of professional football.
His approach centres on providing youngsters with straightforward instructions and specific targets before they enter the pitch. This allows them to understand their roles and gives them a clearer picture of what the technical team expects during matches.
Rather than burdening Padime and Masilela with too many tactical details, Ouaddou prefers to focus on a few important principles. These include making sensible decisions when in possession, attacking opponents with purpose and finding effective positions in threatening areas near the opposition's goal.
At the same time, the coach wants his young players to enjoy their football and showcase their creativity. However, he also expects them to remain disciplined, focused and tactically aware, particularly when facing difficult situations during matches.
As Orlando Pirates prepare for another demanding season involving domestic competitions and continental football, the progress of both youngsters could provide valuable options for the squad.
For Padime and Masilela, maintaining consistency, embracing the coaching staff's instructions and demonstrating a willingness to improve will be essential to earning more playing time.
