Da Cruz Backs Injured Chiefs Stars to Rescue Title Challenge After Soweto Derby Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz remains optimistic about his team's Betway Premiership title ambitions despite falling 12 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns following their Soweto Derby defeat.

The Amakhosi suffered a 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday, October 31, in a result that further complicated their pursuit of the league leaders.

However, Da Cruz believes there is still enough time for his team to recover, pointing to the return of injured players as a major factor that could improve their performances during the remainder of the campaign.

Speaking after the derby, the French tactician reminded supporters that the league season is far from over, with 21 fixtures still remaining.

"It is more difficult today after this game, but the PSL is a long journey. There are 21 fixtures remaining," Da Cruz said.

The Chiefs coach believes injuries have disrupted his team's rhythm since the beginning of the season, making it difficult to maintain consistent performances.

He also suggested that several dropped points could have been avoided if his players had shown greater experience in crucial moments.

"Normally, many draws, we deserved to win these games, but because of our lack of experience, we didn't win these games," he added.

Mayo's return could provide a major boost

One player whose return could make a difference is Khanyisa Mayo.

The striker has been unavailable for much of the campaign because of a back injury, but Da Cruz recently indicated that he is getting closer to returning.

However, the coach cautioned that Mayo was not physically ready for the intensity of the Soweto Derby.

His availability could provide Chiefs with another attacking option, particularly as they look to improve their efficiency in front of goal.

Other players, including Langelihle Phili, Nkanyiso Shinga and Siphesihle Ndlovu, have also experienced injury setbacks this season.

Getting these players back into contention would give Da Cruz more selection options and potentially reduce the pressure on the younger members of his squad.
